St Kilda is a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It is located 6 km south-east from the CBD and bordered by Port Phillip Heads to the south. St Kilda was initially named “St Kilda Village” by Scottish settlers who established it in 1835.
The area has been home to many notable Victorians including writers Dame Ngaio Marsh and Randolph Stow; comedian Barry Humphries; painter Sir Russell Drysdale; poets Christine Wallace and Dorothy Porter; artist Sidney Nolan (who painted his famous Ned Kelly series while living in Fitzroy Gardens); actor Peter Finch; composer Peter Sculthorpe; actor/producer John McCallum; singer/songwriter Paul Kelly (of The Coloured Girls fame); former Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard MP(Labor Party) – who grew up in nearby South Yarra before moving with her family when she was nine years old – as well as many other artists, musicians and performers who live there today!
